Legendary Indian singer Manna Dey, who was undergoing treatment in a Bangalore hospital passed away at the age of 94 following a recurring lung infection and renal failure.
Dey was admitted to Narayana Hrudayalaya five months ago following respiratory problems bid adieu at around 4 a.m. Thursday.
"Mannada breathed his last around 4 a.m. after his condition suddenly deteriorated in the wee hours though he was on a ventilator in the intensive care unit," Narayana Hospital spokesman K.S.Vasuki.
The multilingual singer now survives with two daughters Rama and Sumita.
"Dey's eldest daughter (Rama) rushed to the hospital and was at his bedside when the end came after we alerted her about her father's deteriorating condition," Vasuki said.
Born as Prabodh Chandra Dey to Purna Chandra and mother on May 1, 1919, the versatile singer started his playback career in 1943 with the film Tamanna and record more than 4000 songs in Hindi, Bengali, Assamese and other regional languages.
The Government of India for his pioneer works in the field of music honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.
