Observing the 109th birth anniversary of Second Prime Minister of India and freedom fighter Lal Bahadur Shastri, tributes are being offered to him at various points of the country including the national capital.
For paying homage to him, President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohd Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, senior BJP Leader Lal Krishna Advani along with Lal Bahadur's son Sunil Shastri and Anil Shastri visited to Vijay Ghat and paid floral tribute on his memorial.
Lal Bhadur Shastri was not only a great freedom fighter but was a great Prime Minister too who showed his courage in Indo-Pak war in 1965 which concluded in ceasefire. However, India dominated in that war and India became successful in halting Pakistan backed insurgency in Kashmir. Lal Bahadur Shastri emerged as a national hero and during the war he gave a slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', which is still very famous and boost the courage of soldiers and farmers.
Popularly known as 'Dharti ka Lal', Shastriji was born on October 02, 1904 in Srivastava Kayastha family in Mughalsarai (Uttar Pradesh). He was highly influenced with Mahatma Gandhi and followed his (Gandhiji’s) values throughout his (Shastriji’s) life. Before becoming the Prime Minister of India, he served on various posts in Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru’s incumbency like Minister of Railways and Transport, Minister of External Affairs, Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Commerce and Industry. More over he also served on various ministries and posts in Uttar Pradesh.
Shahtri died on January 11, 1966 in Tashkent (erstwhile USSR), a day after signing the Tashkent pact with Pakistan in mysterious condition. Tashkent Pact was a ceasefire pact held after Indo-Pak war 1965. It was said that he died due to cardiac arrest while his family claims that he was poisoned.
