Johannesburg , Tue, 08 Oct 2013 ANI

Johannesburg, Oct. 8 (ANI): The United Nations has revealed that by the end of 2013, around 2.7 billion people, amounting to 40 percent of the world population, will be connected to the Internet.

The UN's International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has said that 250 million people came online in 2012 but 4.4 billion people remain unconnected and 90 of those still unconnected to the Internet live in the developing nations.

According to News24, the ITU revealed that there would be 6.8 billion mobile-cellular subscriptions, almost equal to as many as there are people on the planet, by the end of the year.

The ITU's annual information and communication technology (ICT) Development Index ranks South Korea as the leader for the third consecutive year, based on its level of ICT access, use and skills, followed closely by Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Finland and Norway. (ANI)
