Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal Thursday launched an affordable video telephony service in Delhi and Mumbai as pilot a project.
This Next Generation service will be provided by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) in Delhi and Mumbai initially on optical fiber network through which user can call from desk to desk in the office as well as from desk to other city where this service is available.
Terming it as a 'revolutionary step', Sibal said the aim of the service is to ensure that everyone can use it at an affordable price.
"This service (video telephony service) will expand business of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and MTNL. The landline space, which was being occupied by mobile phones, will get reduced. The business plan should be such that the common man can pay that amount," said Sibal.
Using video telephony service, corporate companies can expand their business, added Sibal.
He emphasized that the pan-India service would not only bring people closer, but also provide a boost to broadband service.
For providing this Next Generation service, MTNL has collaborated to Ahmedabad based ICT solutions provider Sai Infosystem (India) Limited which has launched its handset with tag-name of ‘Vfone'.
This service can be availed over existing MTNL connection.
Any MTNL customer can now avail this service to make high quality Video call through MTNL's landline or Fibre network. MTNL shall provide special PVC (Private virtual circuit) on broadband connection through which traffic of Video calls will flow.
With the launch of Video Telephony, organizations can have instant face-to-face meetings, sales reviews, and training sessions at 25% of the current cost. Apart from desk-to-desk calling, these Video Phones can also be connected to large screens like TV/Projector for Video Phones will work simultaneously with landline and broadband.
Using this service, calls can be made within India on MTNL / BSNL HD-Voice and Video Telephony network. Video call charges are Rs. 2.50 per minute.
