NCC to plant 90,000 saplings in Bengal

Kolkata, Sep 20 (IANS) The National Cadet Corps has embarked on an ambitious tree plantation drive in a bid to give a green cover in West Bengal, starting from Kolkata, by planting 90,000 saplings

With the year being observed by NCC as the Year of Conservation, its West Bengal and Sikkim NCC Directorate are hoping to plant the saplings across West Bengal with an avowed aim of "one cadet, one tree", according to a defence ministry release.

The Indian army had July 28 launched a drive to plant 5,000 saplings to augment the existing green cover in and around the vast expanse of Kolkata's Maidan - a five square km open field close to the city centre.

The "go green campaign" on the stretch, widely acclaimed as "Lungs of the City", was undertaken by the Bengal Area of the Eastern Command.
