New Delhi, Sep 14 (ANI): Women social activists on Saturday questioned the illogical comment made by December 16, 2012 gang rape defence lawyer A.P. Singh.
Singh had said rapes could only be curbed if male family members control women. In response, women rights activists said courts should take suo motto cognizance of his remark and initiate strict action against him.
Human rights activist Shabnam Hashmi said the court had the authority to take an action against Singh without any complaint being filed against him and it should exercise that right.
"It is very unfortunate what Mr. Singh has said. I think there is enough reason for the court to take suo motto action against him because when an educated person who is fighting as a lawyer gives this kind of a statement, it harms the society and this is very anti-woman," said Hashmi.
Social activist Annie Raja demanded that Singh should be debarred from court for making such remarks against women.
"I think he doesn't have any moral right to work or continue with his profession. So, I don't know what action will the court take, but I think he should be debarred from the counsel," said Raja.
Meanwhile, social activist Neelam Katara suggested that like other nations, the former's license should be suspended for a certain period of time and he should be made to attend citizenship classes.
"It is very important to make him realise that his statement was immoral. You can't take away his license but his license should be suspended for a few days and he should be sent to citizenship classes. No matter what the profession is, a person with such mentality should be made to attend such classes," said Katara.
Defending his clients, Singh said had his daughter treaded on the wrong path, he would have burnt her alive.
"If my sister or daughter prefers having a relationship before marriage or spoils her character, I have the courage to make her stand in my farm house and set her on fire in front of all my family members. I belong to a Rajput family where a characterless girl is not required because of which the society is moving towards destruction. No society will tolerate sex by a woman before marriage," said Singh. (ANI)
