'Zubin Mehta's music would spread love, brotherhood': BJP

New Delhi, Sat, 07 Sep 2013 ANI

New Delhi/ Srinagar, Sept. 7 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday hit out at separatists groups for opposing a concert by renowned conductor Zubin Mehta in Srinagar today, and said his music would spread love and brotherhood among different communities.

"Zubin Mehta is a musician with international fame and his show will spread love and brotherhood among different communities. No one should oppose the concert. The separatists are wrong as they are opposing it and the government should make efforts so that the concert takes place," BJP leader C.P. Thakur said.

Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir welcomed the concert, and said that it would not have any impact on the culture of the valley.

"If Zubin Mehta's concert is being organised here, it's a very good thing. People from across the world are coming to enjoy it. It will not create any impact on our culture," he said.

Chairman of the J and K National Panthers Party Bhim Singh alleged that the criticism over Zubin Mehta's concert is sponsored by certain elements.

"Zubin Mehta's musical show which is being organised in Srinagar, Kashmir is most welcomed. I want to remind those who are criticizing it for criticism sake only because they are sponsored by certain elements," Singh said.

Mehta would conduct a 90-minute 'Ehsaas-e-Kashmir' (Feel of Kashmir) music concert in the Shalimar Mughal Garden on the banks of the Dal Lake.

"I didn't choose Kashmir, Kashmir chose me. Music is the message of peace, music only brings peace," he told media after receiving the 'Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony' from President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday.

Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a general strike in the region on Saturday, while a little-known militant group has threatened to attack the guests if the concert takes place.

Meanwhile, Kashmir Police have arranged a multi-layered security arrangement to ensure safety of Zubin Mehta, his troupe and the audience.

The separatists claim that holding of Mehta's concert in a 'conflict zone' will change the nature of Kashmir dispute. (ANI)
