Envoy thanks Manmohan Singh for his perspective on Syria

New Delhi , Fri, 06 Sep 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Sept 6 (ANI): Syrian Ambassador to India, Riad Kamel Abbas, on Friday welcomed New Delhi's stand that any action against Syria should be under the UN framework, and said his nation followed India's principle of non-violence.

"We highly appreciate the position of India on the issue of Syria who ask for political solution and not external intervention. That is not what we want for our country. This statement is very good for us," Abbas said.

"Syria asks the UN to send committees to investigate about chemical weapons in Syria. Syria condemns any chemical weapons. Syrian Government did not use any chemical weapons, and we will not use it against its people. I thank the Prime Minister of India. This is what we expect from our friends. We use the principle of India of non-violence," he added.

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said that during the dinner hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin for G-20 leaders last night, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan had said that India supports the view of ascertaining facts on what happened in Syria before taking any action against it.

Singh had said that whatever action is required in Syria should be under the UN framework, amid growing pressure on US President Barack Obama from his Russian counterpart and other world leaders not to attack the Arab country.

He said countries should wait for the UN Inspection report, and in case the report verifies the use of chemical weapon, action should be taken under the auspices of United Nations only.

Dr Singh said the violation of any international law by Syria should be dealt by United Nations. (ANI)
