New Delhi, August 23 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shazia Ilmi on Friday said the heightened instances of violence against women is a worrisome issue as it disrupts an environment created in the country for females to flourish in, specifically, the professional aspect of daily life.

"We say that women should step out of their houses and parents should allow their daughters to do the same but how will someone have the courage to step out? Till when will women live under fear? She is a photojournalist; it's her job to shoot whether it is day or night. So will any girl work if such fear prevails?" Ilmi questioned.

Several politicians and protesters have expressed that Thursday night's incident in Mumbai reminds the people of the horrors of the December 16, 2012 New Delhi rape case, which compelled the country to revisit and revise its rape laws.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh on Friday confirmed the arrest of one accused, in connection with Thursday evening's brutal gang rape of a young photojournalist in the city, and said that the female victim is in stable condition. Singh also requested the Central Government to allow this case to be treated in a fast-track court, so that justice is handed out in an efficient and timely.

"One has been arrested and four others have been identified. This is a sensitive case. We cannot reveal more information about the accused," Singh said.

Singh confirmed that the accused live in the vicinity of the area where the incident happened and said that there are property offences against two of the accused in the case.

Confirming the details of the incident, Singh said that around 6-6:30 p.m. last evening, a girl with her colleague, went to Shakti Mills compound through the Mahalaxmi station.

The female victim, a trainee photojournalist, was taking pictures. The accused came there and asked them how they could enter the building since it was Railway property. They also accused the boy of having been involved in a murder in the area few days ago.

Soon afterwards, one of the accused tied the boy down with a belt, and took the female victim 15-20 feet away, while two of them stayed with the boy and then they committed the ghastly crime in turns.

The Mumbai Police was informed of the incident at 8 p.m. last evening and the Joint Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and twenty police teams were formed as part of immediate investigation into the case. Additionally, forensic experts were also called in last night. (ANI)
