New Delhi, Aug. 23 (ANI): Crusader for women's rights, Ranjana Kumari, on Friday expressed her anguish over the gangrape of a 23-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai, and said there has to be a fear of law instilled in every citizen's mind so that such horrendous crimes do not place in the near future.

Kumari said the first and the foremost thing is to catch the culprits and punish them.

"There has to be fear of law instilled in every citizen's mind. You cannot get away with impunity after engaging yourself in such a horrendous crime. If that kind of message is not conveyed and society also has to wake up to the call," she added.

The women's rights activist urged the people of Mumbai to rise to the occasion and insist that all the culprits responsible for this heinous crime must be arrested.

"Nobody is safe today because people are getting away with impunity. The case that happened with 'Nirbhaya' (December 16 gang-rape) in Delhi, (There was) so much of protest. We were six days on the streets and what has happened till date, no judgement has come," she said.

One accused has been arrested in the gangrape by five men of a woman intern photojournalist in Central Mumbai. The four other accused have also been identified.

The incident took place last evening in Lower Parel area where the woman had gone for an assignment.

The 23-year-old woman was working with an English Magazine as an intern. According to police, the men tied up the friend who was accompanying her and raped the woman.

The victim, who was admitted to Jaslok Hospital, had sustained multiple internal injuries. She is stated to be in a stable condition now.

The Centre has sought a detailed report on the gangrape incident.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today said that he has spoken to the Commissioner of Police on the gangrape incident in Mumbai urging for stringent action. (ANI)
