Vishakhapatnam, Aug. 21 (ANI): Doctors took to the streets here to protest against the Centre's decision of creating a separate of Telangana.
Hundreds of doctors participated in the protest, shouted slogans and burned effigies to vent their ire against the decision of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh state.
The paramedical staff also joined the doctors in their agitation.
The protest, which entered its eighth day today, was earlier joined by other sections of the society.
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) also joined the protest leading to paralysing of public transport causing difficulty for commuters and office goers.
The doctors participating in the protest claimed that they were not neglecting their duties.
"So, people who are already in the hospital, senior doctors are taking care of them very well, but with the reduction in the number of patients to almost 25 percent the work load on the doctors is not as much as that is expected, because this much of load can be definitely be handled by the senior doctors who are present in the hospital," said Dr P V Sudhakar, the deputy superintendent of a government hospital.
Dr. Sudhakar further said the agitation had not affected the medical services and patients were being treated properly.
"The agitation that is being done by the government doctors in the King George hospital is only for an hour, but they are doing very effectively, everyday in the morning, very religiously, sincerely, and with lot of contempt against the Central government or the Congress High command for taking a decision which is derogatory to the entire fraternity of the medical personnel," he said.
Schools, colleges, both government as well as private remained closed and APSRTC operated very few buses, as most of the staff was on protest.
Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has said that the process for the formation of the new state of Telangana would take about five to six months as per constitutional norms.
"The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has passed a resolution and further procedure will be done according to the Constitution of India. Telangana will be formed by following all the procedures and it would take five to six months," he said.
He also added that Telangana was being formed because it was the oldest issue and the people of that region have been agitating and demanding the formation of a separate state since 1956. (ANI)
