Fighting communalism, neo-liberalism 'equally important': D. Raja

New Delhi , Wed, 21 Aug 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Aug. 21 (ANI): Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his government of using communalism as a cover for their defective economic policies.

"Yes, us Left, are agreeing that the secular democratic values must be upheld-the secular fabric of the country must be protected. But, it doesn't mean that the neo-liberal economic policies must be allowed to play havoc in our country," Raja said.

"It shows not only the Prime Minister, but also the entire Congress Party is in a (state of) panic. That is why these are all desperate panic reactions, somehow to cover up their mistakes or their failures. They are looking for some cover," he added.

Raja said that communalism and neo-liberal economic policies are equal threats to the country.

"Actually speaking, fighting communalism is important, equally important is fighting neo-liberalism-neo-liberal economic policies. Prime Minister should acknowledge, in the name of fighting communalism, he cannot go on justifying the neo-liberal economic policies, which have proved to be disastrous not only for the people for the entire country and for the entire economy," Raja said.

"The Prime Minister should address the immediate concerns of our people-like, inflation, price rise, the decline in the purchasing capacity in the people, the standard of living in the people. The Prime Minister should speak," he added.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Tuesday called upon political parties to unite against divisive forces which try to spread communalism.

Dr. Singh, who was addressing a gathering on the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna award ceremony here yesterday, said there is a need to ensure communal forces do not create a divide in the society.

Criticizing the UPA-led Government's economic policies, the CPI leader once again endorsed that the Centre should concentrate on the growth of the domestic market.

"Unless, the government takes some tangible measures for resource mobilization, domestically, the government cannot have prudent fiscal policies; it cannot overcome the fiscal deficit. Government is trying to use fiscal deficit as a threat to convince people for their threat for their policies to be continued-that is not going to work," Raja said.

The UPA-led government has been severely criticized after the free fall of the rupee and the inflation which has taken over the country.

On Wednesday, the rupee touched its new historic low, despite measures taken by the Centre and the RBI, as it touched 64.20 against the U.S. dollar. (ANI)
