Odisha leads in four-wheeler mode of transportation: Study

Bhubaneswar, Aug 16 (IANS) Odisha has emerged as the leader among 20 major states in terms of growth seen in cars, jeeps and vans as modes of transportation in households during 2001-11, a study revealed Friday.

While the all-India average growth in these modes of transport, per 1,000 households, was about 105 percent during the period, a total of 11 states are ahead of the national growth rate, according to the study conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

They are Odisha (293 percent), Maharashtra (237 percent), Kerala (222 percent), Madhya Pradesh (172 percent) and Jharkhand (170 percent) being top five states in this regard, the study showed.

West Bengal has witnessed slowest growth of only 66 percent, Assocham said here in a statement.

Odisha ranked 16th in terms of scooter taken as the mode of transport with a growth of about 79 percent during the same period.

"Kerala is India's fastest growing state in terms of scooters as the mode of transport in rural and urban centres as the state has clocked massive growth of 198 percent and 101 percent, respectively, during 2001-11," Assocham national secretary general D.S. Rawat said.
