Punjab ex-officials charged with graft

Chandigarh, Aug 16 (IANS) A CBI special court here Friday framed charges against Punjab's former chief parliamentary secretary Raj Khurana and two others in a corruption case.

Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) judge Justice Vimal Kumar framed the charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Apart from Khurana, charges were also framed against Bhag Singh, personal assistant of Punjab's former minister Swarna Ram, and Devinder Singh, a former official of the registrar, firms and societies department, of Punjab.

Khurana, who is accused in a Rs.1.5 crore graft case, was arrested by the CBI May 5, 2011. A car, Rs.15 lakh and nearly a dozen blank cheques were recovered from his official residence in Chandigarh. At that time, Khurana, a BJP leader, was posted as chief parliamentary secretary but later resigned from the post.

According to the CBI, the secretary of an association had lodged a complaint that Devinder Singh had demanded a bribe of Rs.1.5 crore from him to wind up a case.

Devinder Singh had threatened that if the bribe was not paid, the secretary would be sacked and a criminal case would be registered against him.
