London, Aug 10 (ANI): Gay rights campaigners have urged sports presenter Clare Balding has been urged to act 'openly lesbian' at the Winter Olympics in Russia, hoping that her solidarity with gay Russians would be helped by it, as a new anti-gay law in Russia has laid questions over the safety of international gay athletes in the Winter Olympics at Sochi.
According to The Daily Star, Clare, 42, who is in a civil partnership with journalist Alice Arnold, 51, will host 100 hours of coverage from the Sochi games in February.
Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said that the best way Balding could show solidarity with gay Russians was by presenting the BBC coverage as an openly lesbian woman and by publicly stating her opposition to the escalating homophobic repression and violence.
He also said that her presence would be a direct challenge to the Russian government, which is far more effective than staying away.
The nation's anti-gay laws have been condemned following a recent wave of attacks on homosexual men, the report said. (ANI)
