New Delhi, Aug. 5 (ANI): Asserting that the government is willing to discuss every issue on the floor of the house, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Monday appealed to the opposition to cooperate in smooth running of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.The Monsoon Session of Parliament is beginning today and it is my sincere hope and prayer and appeal to all sections of the house to ensure that this session is truly productive of solid results. We have wasted lot of time in the previous two or three sessions and I hope that will not be repeated in this session. The government on its part is willing to discuss every issue on the floor of the house," Dr. Singh told media here.
"And therefore, I appeal to the opposition to cooperate with the government in smooth running of this session and to ensure that this session will be productive as well as constructive," he added.
The Prime Minister had earlier on Saturday said that he looks forward to very constructive and productive Monsoon Session of Parliament, and urged the opposition to cooperate with the government in passing the essential legislative work, including the Food Security Bill.
"We look forward to a very constructive, productive session of Parliament. Lot of time was wasted in previous two or three sessions and there is lot of legislative agenda pending before the Congress, before the Parliament. And I sincerely hope that all sections of the house will cooperate in making it a very productive, very constructive session," Dr. Singh said.
The Prime Minister, who was talking to media here after the all-party meeting convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, said the government on its part is willing to discuss any issue which may agitate the opposition.
"But all that we expect fully is to ask the opposition to cooperate with the government in passing the essential legislative work, which is the primary responsibility of Parliament. Of all the ordinances, five or six ordinances which are before the Parliament and most important is Food Security Ordinance," said Dr. Singh.
"And I sincerely hope that the Parliament in its wisdom will find it productive, find it justified to convert that Ordinance into a Bill and an act of Parliament," he added.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, has demanded a debate on the current economic situation in the backdrop of the declining rupee, rising prices and slowing GDP growth.
Swaraj, who has assured support to the UPA Government to present the Bill on forming a separate state of Telangana during the Monsoon Session so that the struggle for its creation ends, has also demanded a discussion on the Uttarakhand tragedy.
The BJP leader has expressed her disappointment over the session having only 16 sittings.
The Food Security Ordinance is among several important bills to be taken up for discussion and passage in the Monsoon Session of Parliament beginning today.
Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011, Direct Taxes Code Bill 2010 and Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill 2011 are among the 23 bills that have been listed for consideration and passing by the Lok Sabha.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Amendment) Bill, 2013 to replace an ordinance, will also be taken up.
The Rajya Sabha will take up for consideration and passing of the Companies Bill 2012, Whistle Blowers Protection Bill 2011 and the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011. These bills have already been passed by the Lok Sabha earlier. A total of 14 bills are listed for introduction in the current session.
The decision on a separate Telangana state, however, could cast a shadow on the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in the first few days with members from Andhra Pradesh agitated over the move.
Several members from the Seemandhra region belonging to Congress and TDP have tendered their resignations in protest against the decision.
The Congress top brass is attempting to persuade its MPs and ministers not to take extreme action.
Chinese incursions, the arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen in Sri Lanka are among the several other issues likely to be taken up in the session. (ANI)
