Downpour cools Delhi, floods roads

New Delhi,Business/Economy,Environment/Wildlife, Mon, 05 Aug 2013 IANS

New Delhi, Aug 5 (IANS) Rains in the capital Monday afternoon brought relief to the people from the muggy weather but hit commuters due to traffic snarls in various parts of the city due to water-logging on major roads.

"We have receievd several complaints of roads getting clogged, primarily due to the overflooding of drains," a traffic police officer told IANS.

The roads in Kalkaji, Nehru Nagar, Maharani Bagh, IIT flyover, and Ring Road in south Delhi, Rajghat to Delhi Gate in central Delhi and Naraina in west Delhi resembled small rivulets after the rain.

"The rains were so heavy that I got stuck at Connaught Place (in central Delhi) for an hour," said Reema Tiwari who was out for shopping with her friends.

Commuters travelling from Delhi to the satellite towns of Noida in Uttar Pradesh and Gurgaon in Haryana faced a harrowing time, being stuck for long in traffic jams.

The capital recorded 7.88 mm of rain since 8.30 am in the morning, according to a India Meteorological Department (IMD) official.

The day began on a warm and muggy note with the minimum temperature a notch above average at 27.7 degrees Celsius and the maximum humidity at 8.30 a.m. recorded at 85 percent while minimum humidity remained 59 percent.
