New Delhi, July 25 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today welcomed the Delhi Court's decision to convict the lone suspected IM operative Shahzad Ahmed for murder and other offences in the 2008 Batla House encounter case, and pulled up the UPA Ministers, including Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh, for questioning the veracity of this terrorist attack.
BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad saluted the bravery of Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who lost his life the encounter.
"We are quite assured today that the court after examination of evidences found the
Batla House encounter to be genuine and has convicted the terrorist apprehended. I today salute the bravery of late Mohan Chand Sharma," said Prasad.
"What an irony that this Government of India on the one hand was giving him Ashok Chakra on 26th of January to his widow and Ministers in this government, including the General Secretary of the Congress Party, were openly questioning the veracity of this whole terrorist attack-regretful, unfortunate," he added.
Prasad further asked the nation not to belittle the sacrifices made by the men in uniform.
"When the court has held him to be guilty, I would only say that we only try to live for India, who dies for India, the Indian security forces, the policemen, jawans and officers. At least, let us not belittle their sacrifice. And for heaven sake, the threat of terrorism over India is too real, too serious within and from with out don't belittle the enormity of this threat," he said.
A Delhi court earlier in the day convicted lone suspected IM operative Shahzad Ahmad for murder and other offences in the 2008 Batla House encounter case.
Shahzad was held guilty for murdering police inspector M C Sharma and assaulting other police officers.
During the trial, the prosecution examined 70 witnesses, including six eye-witnesses who were part of the raiding team of Delhi Police Special Cell.
In its final arguments, the prosecution had contended that it has sufficient circumstantial evidence and phone records to prove that Shahzad was present in the Jamia Nagar flat in Batla House and was among those who had fired at the police team leading to the death of Delhi Police inspector MC Sharma.
It had said that Shahzad, along with another accused Junaid, had jumped off the balcony and fled after firing at the police team during the raid on 19th September, 2008 in Batla House in Jamia in south Delhi.
The counsel, appearing for Shahzad, however, had claimed that he was not present in the flat in which the alleged shootout took place.
Digvijay Singh had described the encounter as fake, but his party later distanced itself from his remarks.
Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, who was then the country's Home Minister, asserted that the encounter was genuine.
The shootout between the special cell team and the alleged IM terrorists in Batla House locality in Jamia Nagar, Delhi, took place six days after serial blasts hit the national capital on September 13, 2008, leaving 30 dead and over 100 injured.
Acting on a tip-off regarding some terrorists involved in the blasts, the police team led by Inspector Sharma went to Batla House on September 19. Sharma was killed during the incident. (ANI)
