New web app to determine value of Gmail accounts for hackers

Sydney , Fri, 05 Jul 2013 ANI

Sydney, July 5 (ANI): Gmail users will now be able to get a fair idea of how precious their accounts might be to malicious hackers and law enforcement agencies based on new apps released by researchers from two universities.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cloudsweeper, which is a software developed at University of Illinois at Chicago, can scan emails to find any mention of passwords or password resets, and could tell the user how much his or her Gmail account is worth to a hacker based on the black market price for the type of details found in the email data.

The report said that Cloudsweeper could also redact or encrypt the passwords it finds, possibly faster than deleting old emails, with the users having to return to the application to decrypt them if they were ever needed again.

Although the web application crashed shortly after its launch this week, it is expected to be up again shortly, the report added. (ANI)
