Imphal, June 29 (ANI): T.Serabanu Devi is one of Manipur's enterprising entrepreneurs and craftspersons, who has transformed cocoon waste into attractive forms of art.

At 46, she not only earns a livelihood, but also creates employment opportunities for others in the region, most of whom are underprivileged and looking for financial independence.

In 2011, she established "Eramdam Cocoon Products" at her residence near Tinsid Road in Imphal.

At present, she has 15 women working for her.

As proprietor of the Eramdam Cocoon Products, Serabanu says: "When my children went to school, I stayed at home. So, I thought of doing something in my free time, and I started making decorative items, as I was interested in craftwork. Later, I called some local women and we started making different kinds of decorative items."

Earlier, she was also engaged in handloom weaving.

She has participated in various handloom and khadi exhibitions and has also showcased her cocoon products.

Her outfit makes products like badges, curtains, toys, flowers and gift items.

Today, she trains many underprivileged women with an aim to provide them skills, which can help them become self-reliant.

Sini Devi, an Artisan, said: "I am happy to work here as I benefit a lot. I spend the money on my kid's schooling and other household expenditure, so it is very good."

Ranjana Devi, another artisan, said: "This is like getting a government job. After finishing all the household work, we just come here to work. So, it's very helpful, especially for us."

Nowadays, many skilled women in different parts of Manipur have taken up craftwork. It not only adds to their family income, but can also make them self-reliant. (ANI)
