Evidence of 2000-year-old famine found in Jerusalem

Washington , Sat, 29 Jun 2013 ANI

Washington, June 29 (ANI): Israeli archaeologists have found three intact cooking pots and a small ceramic oil lamp; the first evidence of the famine and terror that spread throughout Jerusalem around 2,000 years ago, during the Roman siege.

The items found in a cistern near the Western Wall, not far from Robinson's Arch in the Jerusalem Archaeological Park, belonged to Jewish residents, who took shelter in the underground water channel, Discovery News reported.

According to excavation director at the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), Eli Shukron, people secretly stored their food in the pots in the cistern to hide from the Roman soldiers and the Jewish, who could snatch them away.

Shukron explained that this is the first time that they have found evidences related to the famine of that era. (ANI)
