'Snoop gear' in set-top boxes may soon monitor TV viewers' every move

Washington, Tue, 18 Jun 2013 ANI

Washington, June 18 (ANI): A new technology in US has led to apprehensions about its use leading to potential threat to viewers' privacy.

The technology will track and record viewers' response to advertisements shown on television and allow cable companies to directly monitor viewers' television viewing habits and response to ads.

According to Washington Times, Mass. Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano has introduced a bill, called the 'We Are Watching You Act' in order to prohibit the use of the technology, which directly infringes on the privacy of the users.

The bill demands that the technology, if implemented, should show 'we are watching you' messages on the screen to make viewers aware along with the details about the kind of data recorded and the purpose of collection.

According to the report, the technology includes installation of cameras and microphones in DVRs or cable boxes in order to monitor viewers' responses, statements, and behaviour to various ads, based on which targeted ads are provided to the household.

Capuano said that the technology is an incredible invasion of privacy as the technology can monitor eating, sleeping, exercising, reading and more, the report added. (ANI)
