Agartala, June 1 (ANI): Thousands of devotees lit candles and offered prayers at the Benuban Vihar Monastery in Agartala on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha recently.
Buddha Purnima is the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar and is celebrated with enthusiasm.
Non-Buddhists also joined in the celebrations.
Tripura is home to about two lakh Buddhists who mainly belong to the Mog, Chakma, Barua and Uchoi communities.
On the occasion, a fair is also held every year which attracts a large crowd.
Hriday Kanti Barua, a member of the Benuban Vihar Monastery, said: "There is no discrimination on the basis of religion in this Buddha temple. Everyone is welcome here. Anyone can come here and offer prayers."
In an unrelated event, people from all walks of life also observed the 114th birth anniversary of revolutionary poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the Nazrul Kala Kshetra auditorium.
Songs and group performances by different artistes mesmerized the audience.
Kazi Nazrul Islam made a significant contribution to literature, music, plays and films.
His songs and poems were a major source of inspiration for freedom fighters. (ANI)
