West Bengal politicians condole Rituparno's death

Kolkata, May 30 (ANI): West Bengal politicians today condoled the death of Rituparno Ghosh, who passed away in the morning, following a cardiac arrest.

Quizmaster and Trinamool Congress spokesperson Derek o' Brien also expressing grief over Rituparno's death said, " This is a loss for Bengal, for Tollywood, for the nation and for International cinema. It is tough to talk about Rituparno in the past tense, because his creations wont allow it to happen.

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee said, " This is a big, big loss for the entire Tollywood film fraternity and for all his fans."

"We are stunned. In his sudden demise, Bengal has lost an eminent filmmaker. It is a very sad day for us," Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, who visited Ghosh's residence this morning, said.

"To enable people to pay their last respect to the director, his body would be kept at Nandan film complex from 3.30 PM to 6 PM," she said.

"Thereafter, the body would be taken to the Tollygunj Technician studio before cremation," the chief minister said.

Meanwhile, Education minister of the state and theatre personality Bratya Basu said he was rendered "speechless" by the news and the loss was a personal one.

He recalled that the director had expressed his desire to see his latest play.

Basu said he was a pioneer not only as a director and actor, but also in his contribution to society, noting that with his films like 'Heerer Angti' and 'Unishe April' he had created a new genre of films in Bengal.

Ghosh was born on 31 August 1963 in Kolkata. Both his parents were related to films, his father was a documentary film maker. He completed his schooling from South Point High School, and pursued economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

Rituparno started his career in advertising. His directional debut film 'Hirer Angti' released in 1994. In the same year his second film 'Unishe April' released. This film got critical and commercial success and won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1995.

He won the National film award for Best Director for his Bengali film 'Abohoman' starring Jishu Sengupta, Ananya Chatterjee, Dipankar Dey and Mamata Shankar. He made his first screen presence in an Oriya film 'Katha Deithilli Ma Ku' which is directed by Himanshu Parija and released in 2003.

Ghosh was suffering from pancreatic diseases and he died following a massive heart attack in his Kolkata residence. He was 49 years old. (ANI)
