Sri Lanka to assist probe in Indian cricket scandal

Colombo , Wed, 29 May 2013 ANI

Colombo, May 29 (Xinhua-ANI): The Sri Lanka Cricket Board said on Wednesday it is ready to assist investigations into claims that Indian bookies may have been involved with a tournament held in Sri Lanka last year.

Indian media reports said that some Indian bookies were involved with the franchises in the Sri Lanka Premier League held last year.

Sri Lanka Cricket Board secretary Nishantha Ranatunga told Xinhua that the cricket board is ready to help in the investigations as the board has a "zero tolerance" policy for corruption.

The revelation by the Indian media quoting the Indian police was part of a major corruption scandal surrounding the Indian Premier League.

At least three cricketers of one of the teams participating in the tournament were arrested after it was found that they had fixed some of the matches in return for money from bookies.

Vindoo Dara Singh, a Hindi film actor who was also arrested as part of the probe, had revealed that many Indian bookies are in fact the "Benami" owners of franchises in the Sri Lanka Premier League, the Indian media reported.

Cricket is a popular game in India and Sri Lanka with both countries had won the world cup in the past. (Xinhua-ANI)
