Junagadh (Gujarat), May 22 (ANI): The trade of red chillies has been adversely affected in Gujarat by drought, forcing the prices to rise.
Gondal market yard in charge, Mahesh Vadodaria said production of chillies would be less due to scanty rainfall and drought.
"Red chillies over here are very popular and are also exported. Last year, 12000-quintal's of chillies were produced due to good rainfall and availability of water. But this year, we are witnessing drought and there is scarcity of water as well. Therefore, 9,000 quintal has been produced. Last year, chillies were being produced of chilli till July but this year the production will be less."
India being the largest producer of red chillies has experienced crop failure due to poor weather conditions.
Chilli traders in Junagadh District would incur major loss as the unfavourable weather conditions led to reduction in exports.
Decline in the production of chillies also led to the rise in the price of chilli in the domestic market.
The peak season for chillies last from March till June. Apart from sunlight, the crop requires a balanced volume of water for its growth.
India and China have a 25 and 24 per cent share of global red chilli exports, respectively.
Spice exportS in the first month of fiscal 2012-13 was 58,685 tonnes, compared to 39,396 tonnes in 2011.
In April 2012, chilli sales more than doubled to 30,000 tonnes. (ANI)
