New York, May 14 (ANI): A brewer from Bolivia has created a beer that is based on the same leaf, which is used to make cocaine.
The coca leaves juice has a mild stimulant effect, and is known to ease stomach pain and help people from the lowlands cope with altitude sickness.
Tourists to high mountain cities such as La Paz - located about 11,800 feet above sea level - often rest and drink coca tea to deal with altitude sickness, the New York Daily News reported.
The beer, called Ch'ama or "Strength" in the Aymara language of the Lake Titicaca area natives, is made up of malt, yeast, hops and soaked coca leaves, with no additives or preservatives.
Cerveceria Vicos, a brewery based in the southeastern city of Sucre has been producing Coca beer since 2011.
Vicos owner and manager Victor Escobar said that it is a highly fermented white beer with five percent alcohol content, unfiltered, unpasteurized, and has moderate aroma, color and flavor of coca leaf and hops.
To produce Ch'ama coca beer, coca leaves are soaked in water, then malted barley and hops are added till the mix reaches its proper consistency and after a 20-day fermentation process, it is bottled. (ANI)
