Srinagar, May 11 (ANI): Farmers in Kashmir are reaping it rich ever since they took up trench cultivation.
It is a technique of sowing the seeds before time. Summer vegetables are sown by the farmers in the month of November and December so that it becomes ready to be sold in May.
The trench cultivation was started three years ago in border area of Hiranagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
Firstly the initiative was taken by only three farmers and now nearly one hundred farmers are engaged in trench cultivation
"The cultivation work starts in December. It's very difficult to sow seeds at that time as the fertilizers are not available very easily. We also need to save it from cold weather and arrange for shade. Though all this costs a lot but the Zamindar (owner of the land) gets a lot of benefit from it. At present the rates are pretty good but in the near future they might go down," said Govind Singh, a farmer.
This method of cultivation has helped the farmers earn good money as the soil in the border area is suitable for it and is supporting early sowing of summer vegetable seeds.
"We started Trench Cultivation three years ago and later as people started benefitting from it, an area of around 50 hectares came under trench cultivation. In many places people are adopting this method as the yield is good," said Sat Pal Sharma, Sub Divisional Agriculture Officer, Hiranagar.
The farmers are growing summer vegetables like cucumber, bitter-carrot, tomato, Shimla chilly, bringal, cauliflower and watermelon also by adopting trench cultivation.
Trench Cultivation is becoming more and more popular with time as not only in Kathua but people in other areas have also started adopting this method. (ANI)
