Johannesburg, May 11 (ANI): South Africa national cricket coach Gary Kirsten has stepped down from his post and has declined to renew his contract with Cricket South Africa (CSA), ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy.

Kirsten was appointed from the beginning of August 2011 for a two-year period with an option to renew it for a further two years, Sport24 reports.

The report further said that Kirsten has informed the CSA Board of Directors that he will not be renewing his contract for family reasons.

Stating that it is understandable that Kirsten wishes to spend more time at home with his young family, CSA president Chris Nenzani said that the board is grateful to the coach for his substantial contribution to the team, adding that he has brought a standard of excellence to the national team.

Hoping that Kirsten will complete his tenure by bringing home the Champions Trophy next month, Nenzani added that they have to find a new coach quickly in view of the Sri Lanka tour in July-August and a homes series against India and Australia next season, adding that the board will try to retain Kirsten's services in some capacity keeping in mind his substantial experience as player, coach and mentor.

Expressing his gratitude to CSA, Kirsten said that he is happy for the confidence that the board has showed in entrusting him with the fortunes of the national team and allowing him the flexibility to combine his coaching job with his family life during his tenure

Kirsten further said that he is confident that that the Proteas will continue to go from strength to strength in view of the well-documented highlights over the past two years. (ANI)
