Assam Rifles working to improve lives of people in Tripura

Gournar village (Tripura), May 10 (ANI): The Assam Rifles is working consistently to improve the lives of people in the northeast, including Tripura.

Not only is it involved in maintaining peace, but it also helps the youth in making a better life for themselves.

Recently in Tripura, they provided sewing machines and trained the youth to operate them.

Assam Rifles commandos recently paid a visit to remote Gournar village in West Tripura district to distribute sewing and sock making machines to unemployed youth.

Around 17 boys and girls from the village received training in making socks.

The fund for the goodwill gesture programme is provided by the Centre under the Civic Action Programme so that the security forces can usher in all round development in the region.

"We have to enable and empower them by developing right skills. We thought that after providing them with machines, it is also important to train them to operate it. We will also give them guidance in marketing, procurement of raw materials so that it becomes a self sustaining venture," said Vijay Mishra, DIG, 21 Sector Assam Rifles

Unemployment lies at the root of many social problems, including insurgency. Such vocational training programmes help in curbing crime by channelizing the youth towards a productive life.

It is hoped that the effort will create more employment opportunities and mobilize the available resources for the benefit of the whole community.

"This place is far away from the city. The educated and unemployed youth don't get jobs easily. Such self employment programmes will be of much help," said Tapas Datta, a villager.

"I have completed my graduation but I am unemployed. I am taking the training here as I believe that if I learn to make socks and start a business, it will be profitable. Not everyone can get a job today. This can be a good employment option," added Mitali Sen , a trainee.

The Assam Rifles has been operating as a major counter insurgency force in the Northeast for a long time. And since its deployment, it has been involved in bringing about social and economic upliftment of the region and its people.(ANI)
