Sikh protesters take to streets in Amritsar over Sajjan Kumar's acquittal in 1984 riots case

Amritsar, May 4 (ANI): Protesters of the Sikh community took to the streets in Amritsar on Saturday, after court acquitted Congress party leader Sajjan Kumar accused of murder during the 1984 anti-Sikh communal riots in Delhi.

Protesters from the Sikh community were seen walking on streets, holding placards and raising slogans against the Central government.

A Delhi court had acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and convicted five other accused of charges including rioting and murder.

The pronouncement of the judgment reportedly sparked off a demonstration in the court with a protester hurling a shoe at the judge who acquitted Kumar.

The other five convicted persons in the case were taken into police custody and the next hearing on May 6 would decide on the quantum of punishment to be awarded to them.

Sajjan Kumar has to appear in another court hearing as well in one more rioting case whereas the third case filed against him for rioting has been closed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for lack of evidence.

The demand to punish Sajjan Kumar and another co-accused Jagdish Tytler in the riot cases gained momentum after the Delhi Court on April 10 set aside the closure report of CBI on former Congress lawmaker Tytler, and ordered the reopening of the case against him in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

During the arguments on April 02, the CBI prosecutor had sought the dismissal of the plea filed by the victim, saying the probe has made it clear that Tytler was not present on November 01, 1984 at Gurudwara Pulbangash in Delhi where three people were killed during the riots. (ANI)
