New Delhi, May 2 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Thursday rejected the opposition charge that the death of Sarabjit Singh is a failure of the country's foreign policy.
He said all efforts will be made to bring the mortal remains of Sarabjit Singh, who died in Lahore after being fatally assaulted by six Pakistani prisoners in the Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Speaking to media outside Parliament, Khurshid said there is an extreme level of sadness throughout the country over the issue and the government will provide all support to the family of the deceased prisoner.
He said that Sarabjit's death and India not being able to get him back was a failure of humanity, rather than a failure of governance.
He said that he did not want to score points against the BJP at this time of widespread sorrow over Sarabjit's death.
He said that he was dismayed that even at this tragic moment, the BJP was indulging in politics, instead of speaking in one voice with the government.
Khurshid said he hoped Sarabjit's death would be a lesson for Pakistan.
"We hope that this comes as a lesson to Pakistan. This is not the time for the BJP to play politics. We don't see this as a foreign policy failure," Khurshid said.
Meanwhile, reports from Lahore said that Sarabjit's body has been handed over to Indian High Commission officials after a post-mortem was conducted.
Sarabjit's body will be flown to India by a special aircraft, and thereafter by Border Security Force (BSF) helicopter to his village for final rites on Friday. (ANI)
