Mangalore, May 2 (ANI): Launching a frontal attack on the Congress-led UPA Government over the death of Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said New Delhi had failed miserably in imposing pressure on Pakistan to have him released.
Modi, who was addressing an election rally in Mangalore, said India had enough time to make countries across the world aware about the Sarabjit case.
"By making our embassies and missions in different countries active, it was time to make the different countries of the world aware on this issue against Pakistan. There was a need to put pressure on Pakistan. But the government in Delhi left the entire matter on his family," said Modi.
"Sarabjit's sister cried for help to rescue her brother, but the government in Delhi did not show its power. It did not show even its diplomatic power. And, the main reason for that, is that there is a weak government in Delhi," he added.
Taking on the ruling Congress Party on the incident, Modi said there is a weak, directionless and non-ideological government in Delhi.
"Can anybody just imagine as to what happened in Pakistan with Sarabjit. He was killed. It is my direct charge against the Pakistan Government. I would also like to draw the attention of the international community. The killing of Sarabjit inside Pakistan is an extra judicial killing," said Modi.
"In every country of the world, there are riots among the prisoners inside the jails. The prisoners' fight with each other, at times misfortunes even take place. But never does the riot take place inside a cell that has death row prisoners," he added.
The Gujarat Chief Minister said death row prisoners are always kept in isolation, away from public view, but in Sarabjit's case, the jail authorities in Pakistan created an opportunity for him to be attacked by fellow inmates, resulting in his murder.
Sarabjit died of cardiac arrest in a Pakistani hospital in the wee hours on Thursday after being comatose for nearly a week following a brutal assault by fellow inmates in a high- security jail.
Sarabjit had been admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital, where four of his family members - his sister, wife and two daughters - had visited him.
They returned to India yesterday, and condemned the Indian Government for not taking up their cause in right earnest.
Dalbir Kaur even called on Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to resign over the issue.
Sarabjit had been on death row since 1991 after he was convicted of espionage and links to a series of bombings in the Punjab province of Pakistan. (ANI)
