'Popular' Afridi dropped from Pak's Champions Trophy squad

Sydney, Apr 30 (ANI): Popular Pakistani player Shahid Afridi has been dropped from the 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy following the all-rounder's below-par performances in South Africa and a domestic competition.

Afridi, who still holds the world record of fastest one-day century, has not taken a single wicket in his last six one-day internationals and has hit just two half-centuries in his last 15 one-day innings, while managing a mere 70 runs and three wickets in four matches for his domestic side this month, News.com.au reports.

Stating that Afridi has not been in a good form recently, Pakistan's chief selector Iqbal Qasim added that although the player had been selected as a bowling all rounder, he was not up to the mark and could not score at crucial occasions for which he was dropped.

However, Qasim assured that Afridi's career was not finished, adding that if he performs well at the domestic level, he can still stage an international comeback.

According to the report, Pakistan will be led by Misbah-ul Haq in the eight-nation tournament to be played in England from June 6-23.

They are drawn in group B alongside arch-rivals India, the West Indies and South Africa. They play the West Indies at The Oval, London on June 7 before squaring off with South Africa (June 10) and India (June 15).

The squad for the tournament consists Misbah (captain), Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Imran Farhat, Asad Shafiq, Abdul Rehman, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal (wicket-keeper), Umar Amin, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, Saeed Ajmal, Asad Ali, Ehsan Adil, Wahab Riaz, the report added. (ANI)
