Sarabjit's health critical after attack: Pak lawyer

Lahore, Sat, 27 Apr 2013 ANI

Lahore/New Delhi, Apr 27 (ANI): Amid building diplomatic uneasiness, counsel of Sarabjit Singh, who was attacked by inmates in a Pakistan jail on April 26, said on Saturday that the Indian prisoner's health was critical.

Convicted of spying for India, Singh was attacked and seriously injured by fellow inmates at Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore on Friday, an incident that could inflame the uneasy relations between the two nations.

The Indian prisoner's counsel, Owais Sheikh, spoke to media about the incident while praying for Singh's early recovery.

"A jail inmate has attacked Sarabjit Singh and prison authorities have brought him here in serious condition. His health is critical and this incident is very disturbing. As this case is connected to the relations between India and Pakistan, I would pray that god saves Sarabjit Singh," said Sheikh.

Sheikh added that when he last met Singh, he had spoken of threats from inmates following the execution of Kashmiri militant Afzal Guru, responsible for attacking the Indian parliament.

As per media reports Singh is now in coma and on ventilator and intravenous drips as his family presses its demand to visit the prisoner at the hospital.

Meanwhile India had sought consular access to the 49-year-old prisoner.

Sarabjit Singh was arrested in Pakistan in 1991 and sentenced to death on charges of spying and carrying out four bomb blasts that killed 14 people.

However, his family members contend that he is innocent.

Four years ago, the then President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf stayed the execution after appeals for clemency from Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. (ANI)
