New Delhi, April 27 (IANS) A day after a six-year-old girl was found unconscious near a public toilet in south Delhi with critical injuries, she continues to be under intensive care though her condition is stable, a doctor treating her said Saturday.
"The six-year-old is stable right now, and she is still in ICU at the AIIMS trauma centre. She has coped well with life-saving surgery, performed yesterday (Friday), which lasted nearly three hours," said Biplab Mishra, trauma surgeon, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre.
Doctors said they were waiting for the results of medical examinations to confirm whether or not it was a case of rape.
"There is severe damage to the anal canal. We are waiting for medical reports to confirm whether it was a rape, as she suffered severe rectal-vaginal injuries. Though there is evidence of penetration, we don't know whether it was a foreign object," the doctor said.
The girl also had a sharp cut on her neck.
"The neck had a deep cut, we had to operate upon her and she is now not able to swallow food," the doctor said.
A passer-by spotted the girl lying unconscious and informed police Friday. Policemen took the girl to hospital.
The victim's uncle said the girl had gone to relieve herself at a public toilet in Badarpur in south Delhi, close to her house, when the assault occurred.
"Her neck had a deep injury caused by a sharp-edged weapon. She was found naked," the victim's 30-year-old uncle said.
Police is yet to nab the culprits; the public toilet's contractor has been detained.
The victim's father is a balloon-seller.
