Dharamsala, April 26 (ANI): Exiled Tibetans in Dharamshala took out a candlelight vigil to express solidarity with their compatriots who had recently set themselves on fire to protest against Chinese rule.
In the recent incident, two Tibetans had set themselves ablaze in protest against the repressive rule of China.
Nearly 100 Tibetans have self-immolated themselves in protest against Chinese rule since 2009.
The candlelight vigil was organised by Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) and scores of Tibetans and Buddhist monks took part in it, carrying placards with pictures of self-immolators.
In the past few months, the Chinese authorities began a new tactic to discourage protests, detaining and jailing people in various provinces of Tibet who they believed have instigated the self-immolations.
The latest detentions took place in Gansu's neighbouring province of Qinghai, where police detained 70 'criminal suspects', 12 of whom were formally arrested, meaning they will be charged.
The government had also seized televisions in Tibetan areas to prevent people from watching 'Anti-China' programmes telecast from abroad.
Meanwhile, Beijing has stepped up propaganda efforts aimed at the outside world, blaming the Dalai Lama and overseas Tibetan groups for fomenting the self-immolations. (ANI)
