India urged to help end killings in Myanmar

New Delhi,Diplomacy,Indo-Pak/Pakistan,Immigration/Law/Rights, Mon, 22 Apr 2013 IANS

New Delhi, April 22 (IANS) Human Rights Watch Monday urged India to use its influence with Myanmar authorities to demand an end to attacks on Muslims there.

"India has long maintained that its policy of quiet engagement with the Burmese authorities has great impact," Meenakshi Ganguly, the group's South Asia director, said in a statement.

"Now that it is clear that crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing are being perpetrated in Arakan state, New Delhi must press upon the Burmese government to put an immediate stop to the abuses against the Rohingya (Muslims), hold the perpetrators accountable, and amend the Citizenship Act to eliminate discriminatory provisions that have placed the Rohingya at risk of becoming stateless," she said.
