New Delhi, Apr. 20 (ANI): Congress President Sonia Gandhi has condemned the brutal rape of a five-year-old girl in the national capital, and demanded strict action against the accused.

"Congress President Sonia Gandhi has condemned the heinous crime that took place with a five-year-old girl child. She has told the government and the administration that it is time for action, not words and strict measures should be taken," said Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi.

"A situation should be created so that no one dares to commit a similar crime in the near future. She has also urged the society to be more alert," she added.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Saturday promised tough action against the cops who allegedly tried to hush up the case by offering money to the victim's parents.

"An inquiry is going on to find out if there was any lapse on the part of police. We will take action against the policemen who are found to be guilty. We are waiting for the report. Give us some time, we will take action," he told mediapersons here.

Shinde described the incident as very serious, and said there is a need to be alert to check such crimes in the future.

The Home Minister said he was not fully aware of the present condition of the victim.

"We are trying to ascertain her medical condition," he said, while responding to a question on the condition of the girl presently undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Shinde further said the accused person had been arrested and will be brought to Delhi.

The doctor treating the five-year-old rape victim at the AIIMS today said that the girl is stable and is responding to medical treatment.

Protests took place outside AIIMS and Delhi Police Headquarters today demanding justice for the victim and punishment to policemen who allegedly did not help locate the girl who went missing on April 15.

Activists belonging to the Aam Aadmi Party and SFI protested outside the Delhi Police Headquarters here, alleging police apathy in the case, while others staged a demonstration outside AIIMS and expressed their solidarity with the girl. (ANI)
