New Delhi, Apr. 20 (ANI): In the wake of massive protests in the national capital against the rape of a five-year-old girl and demand for action against policemen who allegedly tried to hush up the case by offering money to the victim's parents, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Saturday promised tough action against the cops who are found to be guilty.
"An inquiry is going on to find out if there was any lapse on the part of police. We will take action against the policemen who are found to be guilty. We are waiting for the report. Give us some time, we will take action," he told mediapersons here.
Shinde described the incident as very serious, and said there is a need to be alert to check such crimes in the future.
The Home Minister said he was not fully aware of the present condition of the victim.
"We are trying to ascertain her medical condition," he said, while responding to a question on the condition of the girl presently undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Shinde further said the accused person had been arrested and will be brought to Delhi.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Prabhakar today said that the initial medical report confirmed that the victim was locked in a room for at least 40 hours.
"It is completely correct that she was locked in that room for around 40 hours. According to the report from MLC (medico legal certificate) and the preliminary interrogation of Manoj, it seems that he believed her to be dead and left her there," he said.
Prabhakar further said the accused has been arrested and will be brought to the national capital at the earliest for interrogation.
"The Delhi Police and Bihar Police arrested Manoj, son of Bindeshwar Shah from his village of Chiknouta in Muzaffarpur district, in a joint operation late in the night yesterday. Today morning, his transit remand has been received and we are attempting to bring him to Delhi at the earliest and begin his interrogation," he said.
The doctor treating the five-year-old rape victim at the AIIMS today said that the girl is stable and is responding to medical treatment.
Protests took place outside AIIMS and Delhi Police Headquarters today demanding justice for the victim and punishment to policemen who allegedly did not help locate the girl who went missing on April 15.
Activists belonging to the Aam Aadmi Party and SFI protested outside the Delhi Police Headquarters here, alleging police apathy in the case, while others staged a demonstration outside AIIMS and expressed their solidarity with the girl. (ANI)
