STORY: The poor parents of a 16-month-old infant girl, suffering from hydrocephalus, left Agartala in India's northeastern state of Tripura on Tuesday (April 16) for New Delhi, after a private hospital in the city, offered free treatment to the child.

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the brain resulting in the head growing to thrice or more the normal size.

The case of the child's ailment had been reported from the village of Jirania Khala, 32 kilometres from Agartala, the provincial capital.

The child, Roona Begum, was diagnosed with hydrocephalus within weeks of her birth in the government-run hospital at this remote village.

Doctors in Tripura had earlier said that the child needed specialised care, for which the parents would have to travel to a major cities.

However, her father Abdul Rahman, who is a kiln worker and earns barely enough to provide for family's food, was unable to afford the expensive treatment.

Meanwhile the offer of a renowned hospital in New Delhi came to the family's rescue.

Roona left Agartala with her parents, Rahman and Fatema Khatun, on Tuesday (April 16) morning.

Before their departure, Rahman, told reporters that he was expecting good health of his baby girl.

"I am praying that my child gets well and I am able to save my child. I am taking her for better treatment. I am trying to save her life. Everything lies in the hands of God," Rahman said.

Experts say that if a hydrocephalus patient is left untreated, it inevitably deteriorates the health of the victim by putting excess pressure on the brain, which causes headaches, blurred vision and, eventually leads to permanent brain damage.
