Jaya Prada beacon row: Amar Singh meets PM, demands strict action

New Delhi, Tue, 16 Apr 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Apr. 16 (ANI): Former Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amar Singh met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here on Tuesday and demanded strict action against all those involved in alleged removal of the red beacon from Rampur Member of Parliament (MP) Jaya Prada's vehicle.

"I had discussions with the Prime Minister on this issue for around half an hour. I also had a discussion with the Home Minister. And, I told them that the time has come for the examination of laws formulated by the Central Government for the protection of women. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister have taken the matter very seriously," Singh told mediapersons here after the meeting.

"Jayaprada is not an ordinary person, she has her own identity in the cultural field. If using red beacon is wrong, then she should be punished and fined, but to attack her like that is wrong," he added, while lashing out at his mentor Mulayam Singh Yadav and the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) Government in Uttar Pradesh.

Singh, who narrated the whole incident to the media here, indirectly pointed the finger at Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Azam Khan.

"Jayaprada is an elected Member of Parliament from Rampur. She was talking to the people of her constituency at her residence. She was addressing their problems. An ARTO (Assistant Regional Transport Officer) named Kaushalendra Yadav entered there with 40 police officials. He twisted her hand, pushed her and broke the red beacon," he said.

Singh further said that Jayaprada would meet Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and lodge a formal protest in this regard.

The Uttar Pradesh administration has instituted a probe on the removal of the red beacon from Jaya Prada's vehicle.

Amar Singh had earlier on Sunday demanded immediate suspension of the concerned traffic official.

Singh, who was talking to the media in Lucknow, alleged the behaviour was being monitored by Azam Khan. He also dared the Uttar Pradesh Government to initiate action against Jaya Prada if it could be proved that she had done something illegal.

Jayaprada had earlier on Saturday alleged that government officials forcibly removed the beacon of her vehicle. She had claimed a group of about two dozen officials, including policemen, were present when the beacon was removed at her home.

The incident took place at Jayaprada 's residence on Rahe Raza Road in Civil Lines area of Rampur. (ANI)
