Mumbai, Thu, 11 Apr 2013 ANI

Mumbai, Apr 11 (ANI): The Maharashtra Government has suspended 36 policemen for allegedly accepting bribes from a person, which was caught on camera.

The suspended policemen were attached to Nehru Nagar Police Station in Kurla, central Mumbai.

"We have zero tolerance towards corruption. We want to send out a strong message," said Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh.

"We wanted to show that we will not accept such acts. I think this sort of an incident took place for the first time," he added.

According to television reports, the victim, Mohammed Khan, said he was carrying out building works at a friend's home in Nehru Nagar area when he was visited by policemen asking for bribes.

Khan said he installed the video camera after some policemen threatened to frame him for carrying out illegal extensions unless he paid the bribery money

He submitted the footage to a senior police official which in turn resulted in the moves against the policemen.

This is the first time action has been taken against such a large number of policemen in Mumbai. (ANI)
