Washington, Apr 11 (ANI): European football's governing body UEFA, which has been accused of being too soft on racism in the past, has proposed that offending players or officials will be banned for 10 matches if they are found guilty of the offence.
Both UEFA and international football's governing body FIFA have come under pressure following AC Milan forward Kevin-Prince Boateng's decision to walk off the field in a match against Italian fourth tier side Pro Patria in January after suffering racist abuse from the crowd, CNN reports.
Stating that racism is still a scourge on the game, UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said that it is necessary for the sport to have sanctions regarding the offence, adding that if a player or official is found guilty then they will be suspended for 10 matches.
Infantino further added that if the supporters of any team are found guilty of racist comments or slurs against any player or team, then there will be a partial closure of the stadium, meaning that the section where the offense took place will be closed.
Infantino also said that in case the supporters repeat the offense, then the stadium where the match is being held will be completely closed and the offenders will be fined a minimum of 65,400 pounds.
According to the report, UEFA will vote on its new racism proposals in London in May and if they are passed, the ruling could apply to all UEFA competitions from as early as July.
Europe's governing body has also asked its member associations to apply this new anti-racist strategy to their own domestic competitions, with the plans going to a vote of the UEFA congress in May, the report added. (ANI)
