Jamnagar (Gujarat) Apr 10 (ANI): Acute water shortage, which has crippled the lives of many villagers in Gujarat, is spurring efforts to preserve every drop in the drought hit areas of Jamnagar.
The villagers of the Jamnagar district were reeling under acute water shortage as they had to walk miles to get water.
Around 500 villages have been declared drought hit and around 171 villages have been partially hit by drought.
According to reports, over 4, 000 villages and nearly 100 towns are badly hit by water crisis.
A distressed local, Anisha Khafi expressed her ire over the acute shortage of drinking water.
"We come to fill water from a far-off place. We do not get adequate water and it takes a day in travelling. We are facing lot of problem in getting water," said Khafi.
Another irate local, Jasmine highlighted the authority's apathy over erratic water supply.
"There is acute water shortage and we have to leave our small children and come to fetch water. There is not even a single drop of water. The tanker sometimes comes and we are facing lot of problem," said Jasmine.
For millions of people water scarcity can have a devastating impact on livelihoods, which is why sustainable water use has become an important driver of development policy.
However, the District Collector, Nalin Upadhyay said that 119 villages have been provided with the tanker facility.
"We have approved tankers for 119 villages and we start the tanker facility wherever there is acute water shortage. We have also started the tanker facility where boring in not successful. We are very positive. The government has also instructed us to provide adequate facilities to the people so that they do not face any problem," said Upadhyay. (ANI)
