New Delhi, April 8 (IANS) India's top golfer Jeev Milkha Singh said Monday the government should play a bigger role and start making public golf courses for the sport to become popular among the masses.
Golf has always been seen as an elitist sport and Jeev felt that golf enthusiasts needed to be given opportunities to play the game without paying a huge amount of money.
"We need to have more public golf courses and driving range so that the normal masses also get an opportunity to play. The government also needs play a far greater role for the development of the sport," Jeev, who was made the brand ambassador of Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo, told reporters here.
"For the sport to become popular among the masses there should be enough publicity, more sponsors and proper marketing. If these three things are taken care of then I think the sport will grow quicker."
When asked about golf's popularity with cricket, he laughed and said," There is no comparison. If we can make golf 10-15 percent as popular as cricket then it would be great for the sport."
Talking about the movie on his father (Milkha Singh) 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', he said: "I am very excited for my dad's movie. It will be releasing July 12 and I just can't wait."
