Partial response to separatist shutdown in Kashmir

Srinagar, April 6 (IANS) A shutdown called by separatists partially affected life here and other major towns of the Kashmir Valley Saturday.

While shops in Old Srinagar and uptown areas remained closed, private and public transport plied normally in the city and adjoining areas.

Scores of taxis and other vehicles ferrying tourists to various tourist attractions in the region were running normally.

Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway also moved smoothly.

Many private educational institutions remained closed in Srinagar but government offices, banks and post offices were functioning normally.

The shutdown has been called by the united coordination committee of various separatist groups known as the Muttahida Majlis-e-Mushawarat (MMM) to mount pressure on the central government for the return of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's body to the family.

Guru was hanged and buried in Delhi's Tihar jail Feb 9.

Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed at many places in the valley. However, authorities did not impose any restriction on pedestrian or vehicular movement.
