New Delhi, Mar.31 (ANI): Delhi Police has reportedly detained one suspect in connection with the recent murder of business tycoon and former politician Deepak Bharadwaj.
A Times Now channel report announced this on Sunday.
Bharadwaj, one of India"s richest politicians, was gunned down by three unknown car-borne assailants at his farmhouse in New Delhi, on Tuesday.
A family friend of Bharadwaj, Swami Anand Maharaj, then said, "The family of Deepak told me that somebody shot him. Bharadwaj was a close friend, but I don"t know if he had animosity with anybody."
Bharadwaj, who unsuccessfully contested the 2009 general elections on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket, had declared assets reportedly worth Rs. 600 crore.
The attackers entered his farmhouse "Nitish Kunj" located near the Delhi-Gurgaon border, had a chat with 62-year-old Bharadwaj, before firing at him at around 9.15 a.m.
He was declared brought dead at the hospital.
Bhardwaj was engaged in the businesses of real estate, hotels and education.
Delhi Police revealed earlier this week that at least a dozen people have been questioned in connection with Bharadwaj's murder.
Senior Delhi Police officials said that apart from the twelve, they were also questioned Bharadwaj's wife, who stays separately, and his sons, in connection with the case.
They said that they were probing the possibility of contract killers being hired from Sonepat, Haryana, to eliminate Bharadwaj.
There is a view that a property dispute could also have been one the factors responsible for his murder.
Delhi Police also claimed to have located the car that was used by two persons to escape after killing Bhardwaj at his farmhouse.
The Skoda car was picked up from Jind, Haryana late Tuesday night.
Police then said that they had also identified the three shooters, saying they belong to Khera village in the Pooth Khurd area of northwest Delhi which is near the Delhi-Haryana border.
Several teams of the Special Task Force (STF) reportedly conducted raids in different places to nab them.
Police then said that they had got vital clues in the case along with the addresses of the assailants and were on the lookout for them.
Delhi Police is being assisted by their Haryana counterparts in the case.
The breakthrough has strengthened the suspicion that a massive land deal with a rival builder could be the motive behind Bhardwaj's murder. However, the cops have not yet ruled out the involvement of a close family member.
This past week, police teams have been conducting raids in Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttaranchal.
Bhardwaj suffered two bullet injuries in his head and chest and was declared dead at the Army Research and Referral Hospital.
Last year, another business tycoon, Gurdeep Singh Chadha, was also killed at a farm house in Delhi's Chhatarpur area after he entered into a heated argument with his younger brother. (ANI)
