Protests over atrocities against prisoner Chamel Singh

Srinagar , Thu, 28 Mar 2013 ANI

Srinagar, Mar 28 (ANI): Protests erupted in Kashmir on Thursday over the torture and subsequent death in Pakistan of Indian prisoner Chamel Singh in jail.

A legislator of Kashmir's regional Panthers Party, Balwant Singh Mankotia said: "On the one hand, they (Pakistan) talk of mutual cooperation and friendship, and on the other hand, they kidnap one of our farmers and kill him brutally in prison. So, there is no scope of extending a hand of friendship towards Pakistan if it acts in such a indecent manner."

The speaker assured legislators that this issue has been taken up with the state government already and action is awaited.

Chamel Singh was arrested on charges of espionage in 2008. He was sentenced to serve five years in prison in Pakistan in August 2010. He died on January 15, 2013.

Pakistan lawyer Tehseen Khan said the authorities passed racist remarks against Indians, to which Chamel Singh had objected. This resulted in him being thrashed, tortured and killed.(ANI)
