Srinagar, Mar 25 (ANI): State assembly of Kashmir witnessed pandemonium and chaos on Monday over the recent arrest of a militant, Liaqat Ali Shah.
The assembly hall witnessed chaotic scenes, when a legislator from the state ruling National Conference (NC) party, Nasir Aslam Wani raised the issue of Shah's arrest.
Wani later said, " Shah's case must be handled sensitively as it may discourage other militants from surrendering in the near future."
He futher said, "God forbid, there should be no mistrust, no wrong signal should be sent. The government's attitude towards the surrendered militants is not good. Pakistan never wants that this scheme should succeed and the youth should return to their homes. They never wanted it to succeed. We should not reach such a stage where we lose on the confidence building measure."
There were heated arguments among the legislators of the party and the efforts of the speaker to maintain decorum in the house also failed.
Shah was arrested aboard a train, which was on its way to Delhi from northern Gorakhpur city.
According to media reports, Shah belongs to Hizbul Mujahideen.
Shah hails from Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir and is believed to be associated with the Hizbul Mujahideen for the last 15 years.
As per confessions reportedly made by Shah during interrogation, police also arrested another suspected militant from the national capital New Delhi's Jama Masjid area along with a cache of arms and explosives.
A row has erupted between the federal government and the provincial government of northern Jammu and Kashmir over sharing of information about the arrested militants.
Chief Minister of Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, has reportedly requested India's interior minister Sushilkumar Shinde to order an inquiry into the circumstances in which both the militants were arrested.
Kashmir's state government has reportedly stated that Shah was planning to surrender under the rehabilitation policy for militants.
The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has however termed the National Conference's intervention in the case as an undue interference in the work of the police.
BJP's legislator from Jammu, Ashok Khajuria stated that the state government is more interested in rehabilitating militants but not the unemployed youths of the state.
"This Liaqat is a big militant. I heard that the Chief Minister was saying that he is being treated in an unfair manner. I want to ask him, why did he go to Nepal? Who sent him? This government is not ready to give jobs to the unemployed youths of the state, but the militants who go to Pakistan and set up families there, talk about their rehabilitation," he said.
The suspected militant arrested in Delhi was to be questioned in connection with the recent militant attack at a paramilitary camp in Kashmir that took place on March 13, killing five personnel and wounding another five.
India's junior interior minister, R.P.N. Singh, claimed that Delhi police had seized arms and explosives from a hotel in the national capital.
Hizbul Mujahideen has been an active militant group in Kashmir during the height of the unrest.
Tensions have been running high in Srinagar since last month, when India hanged Afzal Guru for an attack on the country's parliament in 2001. The authorities have sought to quash clashes between protesters and police by imposing curfew. (ANI)
